CATER-ARCS School 2027: Climate Risk Adaptation in Action
We’re excited to announce the 2027 CATER School, the fourth in a series of immersive, transdisciplinary schools about adapting to climate risk! This year’s edition will take place in Malawi 18th – 29th April 2027, jointly organised with the NORAD-funded Agricultural Resilience through Climate Services (ARCS) project.

The school is designed for postgraduate students, postdocs, early-career researchers, and practitioners (e.g. from government agencies, NGOs, or the private sector) from diverse backgrounds who want to deepen their understanding of, and capabilities with, transdisciplinary approaches for navigating complex climate risks.
The participation fee is €500, covering accommodation, meals, field trips, and airport transfers. Participants must cover their own travel to and from Malawi, as well as visa and insurance costs. Applicants from low- and middle-income countries may apply for a travel stipend and/or fee waiver via the application form.
Key themes include:
- An introduction to ‘transdisciplinarity’, and the role of transdisciplinary approaches in climate risk research and practice.
- Foundational physical climate drivers, climate forecasting, and Malawian climate dynamics.
- Advances in sub-seasonal forecasting and AI in climate services.
- Climate risk decision complexity and plural knowledge systems.
- Governance, ethics and justice in climate adaptation and services.
- Co-production and community-led responses in adaptation.
- Impact assessments and evaluation of climate service interventions & other related adaptation interventions.

Dear all
I wanted to share an opportunity for PhD students and early-career researchers interested in cryosphere monitoring, remote sensing, GeoAI, hydrology, glacial hazards, or UAV-based monitoring.
CryoConnect: Frontiers in Cryosphere Monitoring and Glacial Hazards is an Indo-Norwegian workshop funded by the Research Council of Norway taking place in Bergen and Rosendal/Folgefonna, 27 September–2 October 2026. The workshop brings together early-career researchers from Norway and India to work side by side on shared challenges in high-mountain cryosphere monitoring and glacial hazards.
The workshop is a collaboration between Bergen, the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee, and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research in Pune.
The main idea is to pair four Norwegian and four Indian researchers based on shared research interests. Each pair will work with a real dataset and research topic, beginning with a short remote preparation phase and then developing the work further during the week in Bergen and in the field. Topics include, for example:
- Cryosphere and glacier monitoring
- GeoAI and machine learning
- Satellite and aerial imagery
- UAV monitoring and photogrammetry
- Hydrology and glacial hazards
- Field-based measurements and validation
The week will combine seminars, hands-on instrument and UAV activities, a paired hackathon, and a field day on Folgefonna, including UAV flights, instrument deployment and GNSS data collection. The aim is not just to complete a one-week exercise, but to develop analyses that can be continued afterwards and potentially form the basis for longer-term collaboration.
