Postdoctoral Research Position in AI Emulation of Coupled Climate Models, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria, Canada (application deadline: open until filled)

The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in the area of Artificial Intelligence based emulation of climate models.  The successful candidate will investigate 1) the formulation of alternative objective functions for surrogate climate model training to improve representation of interannual to interdecadal variability and 2) new strategies for improving the coupling of systems of surrogate atmosphere and ocean models.  This research will be conducted as part of a larger team investigating AI-based emulation of physical models of the climate system.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting proof of concept analysis by developing surrogate model of idealized coupled systems (e.g. Lorenz 96 model) and experimenting with dynamical mode weighting in training
  • Setting up a local instance of the SamudrACE coupled climate model emulator
  • Conducting dynamical mode decomposition for use in objective function preferential weighting
  • Designing, conducting, and assessing numerical experiments with alternative objective functions for SamudrACE training
  • Reporting research results in presentations and peer-reviewed publications

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in climate modelling, artificial intelligence applications to dynamical systems, or equivalent
  • Strong experience in coding particularly with the PyTorch ecosystem
  • The ability work independently as part of a larger team
  • Strong technical writing skills

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience developing and or using numerical simulations of physical systems especially in a climate modelling context e.g. MOM6, SIS2, and FVGFS
  • Experience training/fine-tuning AI-based surrogate models of physical systems especially Samudra, ACE, and SamudrACE
  • Experience in coupling of dynamic components with different intrinsic timescales
  • Experience with spectral and statistical techniques for understanding dynamical system variability

The position is for one year, renewable for a second year.  The salary is $75,000 CDN per year (inclusive of the cost of benefits).

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have completed their PhD requirements prior to their appointment, and the appointment must be within five years of PhD completion (excluding parental leave, time spent outside of academia, and other exceptions outlined in UVic policy). Successful candidates may also need to undergo further HPE screening prior to gaining access to advanced computing resources.
