This June three CLIMATE-INFORMED members from UiO and Oslo MET attended the eighth iteration of the eScience course, which is jointly organised by UiO and Stockholm University, at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Sweden. It was a two-week course in which more than 20 international students, along with a team of teachers and teaching assistants having a wide collection of experience, worked together on topics such as aerosols, aerosol-cloud interactions and soil moisture in climate models, as well as validating model data with observations. The goal of the course was to learn and implement tools for data analysis in climate science through practical exercises in the respective topics. During the free time we enjoyed the nature along the Swedish coast on foot, by bike or with the rowing boats.

Before starting our time in Sweden, we were sorted into small teams with a teaching assistant, who presented us with a choice of possible research topics and some introductory reading material. Once we arrived in Sweden, we started with a set of lectures about the computing infrastructure and resources to get all participants on a similar starting level, before settling into a mixed schedule of group work on the projects and lectures, which were very useful and diverse, from concepts of cloud formation and statistical methods to practical exercises in Jupyter notebooks and GitHub.

Between lectures and group work, we also had free time to walk in nature, ride bicycles and play volleyball (which became a favourite for many of us). Important cultural learning concerned Swedish tradition “fika”, which we learned to enjoy extremely fast and dearly missed after we left.
